A Day in the Life Series

More and more teachers are finding themselves buried under mounds of paperwork that Adam Voigt describes as “pointless box-ticking and red tape that offer[s] little-to-no value to the school environment[7]” and less time in the classroom actually interacting with students – the reason teachers got into education in the first place. Complaints abound of an unhealthy emphasis on testing and a neglect of practical and real-world application and preparation.

Schools across Australia catering for disabilities and in low-income areas are facing challenges above and beyond what the average school contends with on a day-to-day basis. They are trying their level best, despite disadvantage, to give their students the best education possible and steer them towards a fulfilling, successful future, but there are currently many roadblocks in the way, not the least of which is their level of inclusion and involvement in their own communities.

Kylie is a mother of four children in Victoria, three of whom have additional needs, and can offer a unique perspective last year’s COVID-19-induced lockdown learning. As a family of six, with her husband Michael being a teacher himself, this family had its hands full during the extended lockdown from hell that Melbourne endured in 2020.
